A powerful day of leadership training facilitated by Fred Kofman with Senior Executive support from Alex Vauthey and Igor Perisic at LinkedIn. I think I can speak for the Lynda team and say the investment in us and our success within the organization is really appreciated.
“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face”
Some of my key takeaways:
-Taking responsibility versus blame in every situation provides you with power
-Being a Victim of Circumstances gives away your power (“The meeting ran late” versus “I did not leave the meeting on time”)
-If you want to be part of the solution, be a part of the problem.
-External challenge versus ability to respond
-Conflict – no blame, instead what is the next move
-BATNA – Best Alternative to a Negotiated Alternative (what am I willing to walk away with)
-Clean Escalation process – 5 day alignment (max), otherwise both parties should escalate, follow process below to strive for alignment.
Problem Analysis process (we practiced this in work teams following this framework)
1. Frame the issue
2. Understand each others point of view
3. Explain your point of view (be honest with areas of frustration or where you feel let down)
4. Find viable solution for everyone
5. Commit (next steps and execute)
-summarize and check understanding of the problem
-acknowledge and empathy
My own personal favorites
Leadership is the process by which a person sets a purpose for other persons and motivates them to pursue it with effectiveness and full commitment. — FK
The leader’s Job is to develop and maintain a high-performing team. Her effectiveness is measured by the performance of the team.
